6 Years with the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Headphones

After writing a lot of reviews about audio devices on this site, I’ve never shown which headphones I use on a daily basis. I use the Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones, with the 80 OHM version. I really like these headphones – they are comfortable, extremely tough, and sound really good. I’ve been using them for hours, each day, for six years, and they are still in extremely good shape.

In this post, I’ll go over both the pros and cons of the headphones, as well as how they have been holding up for over 6 years of daily use.

These headphones are really good for someone who wants an upgrade from office level headphones – they are affordable, and offer great sound quality and comfort. They offer good sound isolation with a closed back design, and are tough enough to take quite a few knocks and not be affected – mine have been sat on, dropped, ran over with chairs, and are still working perfectly fine.

Being 80Ω, the headphones do require a decent amount of power to produce their peak sound quality. For this reason, it’s probably worth investing in an Amp and DAC to get the full quality out of them. Whilst most laptops and desktops will be able to power them fine, you may find that you have to crank your phones volume quite high in order for it to be audible. For this reason, and a few others, the DT 770s aren’t really on the go headphones – they are designed to be used sitting down at a desk. They are quite bulky, as they do not fold, and the materials can get damaged if completely rained on.

With a mainly plastic construction, the DT 770s are a surprisingly tough. The plastic is very high quality, and I doubt would crack even under high pressure. Holding the headphones together is a metal frame that has the wiring that connects the two ‘buckets’ together. I did find that this was rubbed by the metal headphone arms, so I have taped them onto the frame in order to protect them. The headphones are extremely comfortable – with either velour padding, or optional leather padding, the headphones have enough clamping force to keep securely on your head and offer sound isolation, but not enough to make you feel like your head is being crushed. The pads – velour on my headphones – are soft and don’t stick in hot weather – they cope with sweat quite well, which isn’t surprising due to them being studio headphones. One thing of note is that you’ll want to wash your pads every few months. Build, and comfort, of the DT-770 Pros is brilliant.

Onto sound quality – for ~£100 headphones (at time of writing), sound quality is top notch. The DT 770 Pros have slightly recessed mids in favour of higher bass and treble, with a V shaped sound curve. They bear the typical Beyerdynamic spike for the highs, but I have not found this to be an issue.

The Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pros are an impressive sub £100 pair of headphones, designed for indoor use. Whilst you can take them to the cafe or the library, and still have them perform well, their bulkiness prevents them from being commuter headphones. I would strongly recommend the DT 770 Pros for those looking for comfortable, high quality headphones that will last them years but at an affordable price point.
